Time to change your furnace filter

Furnace Filter Direction.jpeg

Changing your forced air furnace filter on a regular basis (4x per year) is an important step to improve longevity of your furnace as well as improve the air quality in your house.  If you have pets or allergies this becomes even more important and changing filters more frequently may be necessary.

Filters that are more than 2” thick may require less changes per year (typically 2x per year) but for the majority 4x per year is a good practice. I like to start this right around the time your furnace is turned on for the season, typically early to mid October.

To change your filter

  1. Turn off the furnace switch, usually located in the furnace room on the wall or in the floor joists above.

  2. Have the replacement filter ready to install.

  3. Locate the filter by removing the filter slot, usually next to the furnace front.

  4. Remove the old dirty filter and discard.

  5. With a marker write the date on the new filter that was changed.

  6. Insert the new filter taking notice of the air flow direction, make sure the arrow is pointing toward the furnace.

  7. Replace the furnace filter cover door.

  8. Turn the furnace switch back on.
