Heat Loss In Your Attic?

So winter certainly crept in, I had a chance to get the winter tires on but didn’t finish the rest, oh well hoping for a quick thaw to finish up.  I was walking the pooch this morning when I looked up at these roofs, can you guess which one pays more to heat (and cool in the summer) the house.

You want your attic space to be the same temperature as the outside, what’s happening here is we have air leakage from the house into the attic space, the attic becomes warmer than the outside air and melts the snow on the roof.  You can see this when comparing to the neighbors’ house. Another sign to look for is ice damming at the eaves.

There are several ways to deal with this energy loss, the most important is sealing the air leaks, you can deal with adding insulation after.

That’s a trip into the attic to see where the obvious leaks are.  Get that done and you’ll enjoy a warmer winter in the house and feel better knowing you are paying less to heat your home.
